The Nyingma Monastery (Gompa) of Thame, Dechen Chökhor Ling (in English: ‘Dharma Wheel of great Bliss’) is situated in Khumbu / Nepal, about two hundred meters above the small town of Thame (3,800 m) on the southern slope of Sumdur Mountain. Its location (5,377 m), under a high rocky cliff is a spectacular view of many auspicious signs can be seen.
The view of from the monastery lets the mountain on the right hand side appear
like a flowing white scarf, the mountain in front like a mandala. The mountain
range in the background like a stretching lion and in the centre like the neck of a
horse.
Thame Monastery was founded in the 17th century by Rolpe Dorje, a master with
extraordinary powers (see “Dharma Wheel of Great Bliss“, Vajra Publications, 2008).
The main purpose of our project is to help the monks from this monastery, providing them with a warm meal every day. About 30 monks live at the monastery, their age ranges from 10 to 86 years, according to the Ngawang Gyaltsen Rinpoche (born in 1958), also known as ‘Thame Rinpoche’, who is the present principal master. Most of the monks obtain funds for their livelihood by performing religious ceremonies (pujas) in private households of the region.
Some of the monks are very old and the pathways to these houses are long and arduous. Supporting meals for the monastery will help to relieve them of the need to walk these hard and difficult tracks, sometimes burdened with carrying heavy loads as well. They could stay in the monastery and pursue in peace their daily spiritual practice. At the same time the project will benefit other monks by helping them concentrate more on their study in order to pass on their knowledge to later generations. The young monks come from very poor families, and our support will be of great help and relief to them as well.
The present Thame Rinpoche explained the situation of the monks to me and asked if I could help to bring about a suitable project. His request touched my heart and I would like to take responsibility to start and pursue this project, for the benefit of these monks who are in dire need of support.
If you feel inclined to support the project in any way, you can contribute to a long-term solution for this monastery and become a member of the friendly society founded for this purpose.
These sponsors of the project may convey their wishes to the monks, who will include
these in recitations and dedicated prayers.
